About

Dr. Nic Schmoyer is returning to PCOM after graduating from the college in 2021 with his MS in Mental Health Counseling. He received his PhD in Education - Counseling from Old Dominion University, where he focused his dissertation on the supervisory needs of novice behavioral health providers in integrated primary care settings.

As a clinician, educator, and researcher, Nic has a specific interest in integrated behavioral health (IBH), integrated primary care (IPC), and behavioral medicine. He developed a Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) program in a regional healthcare network in SE Virginia that is currently being used and practiced in primary care as a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) during his doctoral internship. Nic has a history of conducting research related to training behavioral health clinicians in IBH and IPC settings, and developing and implementing a standalone IBH elective during his doctoral studies.

Nic enjoys teaching a wide range of clinical mental health counseling coursework and topics, including research, assessment, counseling theories, practicum & internship empirically supported treatments like Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Acceptant & Commitment Therapy (ACT), behavioral medicine, and IBH.
