Abstract

Including evaluations for psychiatric and personality functioning as components of comprehensive assessments of attention and learning problems for older adolescents and young adults provides additional clinical information needed to understand the functional problems that necessitated the assessment as well as factors that might influence prognosis. In some cases, it may be determined that there is insufficient evidence of ADHD or LD to explain an individual's coping difficulties and that other psychiatric factors explain these problems and warrant treatment. More often, coexisting psychiatric and personality variables magnify extant learning and attention problems and must also be addressed in treatment in order to help the individuals develop effective coping strategies and improve their overall well-being.
