Contributing to the Next Generation: The Rise of Anthropology in Medical Education

Research output: Contribution to conferencePoster

Abstract

Medical education is undergoing a paradigm shift; embracing self-directed and life-long learning and an ethic emphasizing community, diversity, cross-cultural awareness, cultural humility, and empathy. Updates to accreditation standards and curricular changes among new and established medical schools have paved the way for a new generation of physicians. Anthropology needs to lead this transformation to facilitate the development of clinical skills that consider the entirety of human existence as part of the care process. Therefore, anthropology programs should increase their involvement in premedical education, promote medical education as a career option, and increase involvement in medical school administrative and curricular development.
