The authors discuss acute and chronic pain in primary care settings. The following topics are addressed: assessment and diagnostic issues; incidence and clinical manifestations in primary care; cognitive-behavioral case conceptualization; identifying and addressing obstacles to treatment; points of collaboration with physicians and family; empirically based treatment approaches; evaluation and treatment outcomes; and considerations with special populations/diversity issues.
