S-T segment variants in young, adult, black women

The electrocardiograms of 210 black women between the ages of 18 and 35 years were examined. These patients did not have hypertension, diabetes, anemia, or intrinsic heart disease, by history or physical or laboratory findings. The limb leads were examined for early repolarization and S-T segment flattening, with the use of Grusin's classification. The results were compared to those of other studies for the appearance and frequency of normal repolarization variants in both black and white subjects. Sixty-two patients (31.9%) had S-T segment flattening in leads II, III, and/or AVF. This investigation found that S-T flattening in black women between the ages of 18 and 35 years is a normal variant.
